In 1624 the elder John Billington was implicated in the Oldham-Lyford scandal which involved blasphemous letters being written and sent to England trying to undermine the Plymouth Colony. Nothing was ever proved and the matter dropped for lack of evidence.
In 1630 the elder John Billington was executed for the murder of John Newcomen with a musket during a quarrel. He was the first Englishman to be hanged in New England.
