Author. According to his flyleaf biography,
John Sutherland is Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College, London, and is the author of a number of works:
Thackeray at Work;
Victorian Novelists and Publishers,
Mrs Humphrey Ward.
He has written three in a series of books containing short essays about 'puzzles in 19th-century fiction', all three of which I highly recommend. They are: Can Jane Eyre be Happy?, Who Betrays Elizabeth Bennet? and Is Heathcliff a Murderer?.
