Josetsu was a Japanese Zen priest, teacher and landscape painter. Not much actual fact is known about his life other than that he lived and taught in Kyoto. His strong approach to the very austere Chinese suiboku-ga (black and white) monochrome painting is thought that be the solid base from which his later, more proficient, students (Shubun and other priest/painters) worked from.
