The highest mountain in Maine, its name means "Greatest Mountain". With sheer cliff walls that rise thousands of feet up from flatland, it is perhaps the most spectacular mountain in New England. Also hard to get to; it is about 2 hours north of Bangor.

One of the endpoints of the Appalachian Trail, the other being Springer Mountain, Georgia. It's been said that you can see Mount Katahdin forty miles before you actually hit it as you hike along the trail, but once you reach the top, the view is entirely worth the difficult climb.
