Nigerian playwright and activist who protested oil exploration in Nigeria's southern Delta region. He and eight others were tried and hanged by the country's previous military government for their activities. The Abacha regime's escalating repression of free speech and other basic human rights has led to a world-wide campaign against the military government and those implicated in supporting that government's actions, including Shell Oil.
