Knocknarea is a mountain of 1014 feet located in county Sligo and is recognisable by its prominent hump-like shape.

It is topped by a cairn, which is 35 feet tall and 200 feet in diameter. This cairn is reputedly the burial place of Queen Maedhbh, the warrior queen of Connaught/Connacht. Given its age, it is more likely to be related to the Carrowmore megalithic tombs. However, to date the cairn has never been excavated.

The "climb" to the top of the mountain is relatively easy and can be completed in 45 minutes. From the top can been seen beautiful views of possibly four surrounding counties, on a clear day. There is a beautiful sense of peace here, it is well worth the effort.
