Lar (?), n.; pl. Lares (#), sometimes Lars (#). [L.] Rom. Myth.
A tutelary deity; a deceased ancestor regarded as a protector of the family. The domestic Lares were the tutelar deities of a house; household gods. Hence, Eng.: Hearth or dwelling house.
