Southern humor newspaper columnist, previously sports editor at Atlanta and Chicago newspapers. His last name is pronounced with the accent on the second syllable. Raised by just his mother in the small town of Moreland, Georgia, married four times (the last a few months before he died), spending the time in between with his beloved dog Catfish, and living through the ups and downs of working with newspapers and then of being a celebrity, most of his writing was based on his own life. Born with the congenital heart defect of a faulty valve, he had several heart operations and died about a two months after the fourth one, on March 20, 1994 at the age of 47.
