Liverpool Museum is the epitome of traditional museums. Owned by NMGM, they participate in many academic and scholastic projects (including JASON).
It has all of the usual departments (natural history, archaeology, astronomy, transport museum, vivarium) as well as a quite respectable planetarium. It is worth a visit, but is not as good as the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
If visiting the museum, it is not hard to miss and is situated conveniently near to Central Library, the Walker Art Gallery, and transport links by train and bus.
