A small market town in Shropshire, England; population about 9000. It is noted
for its eating places - in fact, despite its small size it has more Michelin guide
restaurants than anywhere else in Britain except for London.
The centre of the town is built on top of a hill overlooking the River Teme. At one
end of the town is Ludlow Castle; this is 900 years old and, as you might expect, only
ruins remain. The main street is narrow and winding and has many fine shops
including a delicatessen, antiques shops, bookshops, game butchers and an excellent
market.
St Laurence's church is one of the largest parish churches in England and is
also known for being the burial place of A.E. Housman. It's worth climbing to the top of its tower
for the views of the town and the surrounding countryside.
