The south
Indian city in the state of
Tamil Nadu. A city with a rich cultural heritage and one of the ancient centers of
Tamil culture. The
Meenakshi amman temple is one of the most important(and striking) landmarks of this city which was the capital of the
Pandya dynasty.
This city was also visited by the famed traveller Megasthanes and the Pandyas are supposed to have established trade with Rome as early as 1 BC.
The city also plays the backdrop for one of the greatest epics of Tamil literature, Silappadhikaram written by the Tamil poet Elangovadigal.
The
Madurai district is also famous for it's
Jasmine flowers.
