A
German word that translates roughly to "
resource battle". This was coined to describe the battle of
Verdun, where due to the heavy
entrenchment, there was little room for
tactics, and the question of whose resources would run out sooner became the deciding factor. "Resources" meant
ammunition and
rations, but first and foremost,
people.
Basically, it seemed like the killing would not stop until one side didn't have any more soldiers to send to their deaths, because the commanders on both sides were apparently blockheads who cared little for the insanely high number of casualities.
This is pretty much the same thing as ogg (Sense 2); the terrible thing is that people did it in reality.
