The Matrimandir is the eternally under construction temple in the center of Auroville. The name means "temple of the mother". On the outside it is a huge gold-plated dome, which looks beautiful, tacky, and frightening at the same time. The inner meditation chamber is completely white. At the center of the chamber is a crystal globe, with an "electronically guided" beam of sunlight shining on it. Although the Matrimandir is the spiritual center of the Auroville community, it is not associated with any religion. No services are held, no specific group meditation times. Just white, sunlight, and silence. Auroville residents can come and go as they please. Visitors may only come inside between 4 and 4:45 pm, and must prearrange their visit.
