A viral
disease of the skin,
characterized by one or more firm, dome-shaped nodules with a central dimple and containing a cheese-like substance. The virus is
transmitted by sexual contact as well as by
shared use of clothing, linen, and towels or
other items that have been contaminated with the virus; outbreaks in schools are not uncommon.
For cosmetic purposes, the
nodules may be unsightly, but they are not dangerous. Once diagnosed, a
dermatologist can remove them with a curette or by electrodessication. The nodules can recur if the
infected items are not
sanitized or if a
sexual contact is not treated.
