A neoantigen is a new -- mutant -- protein that forms on cancer cells. Neoantigens help the immune system identify and attack tumors. The number of different neoantigens produced depends on the mutation rate of a specific cancer, which is part of the reason the body is better able to fight some kinds of cancers, and why new therapies, such as mRNA vaccines, work much better on some cancers than on others.
