Nicomedes I was the King of Bithynia from approximately 278-248 B.C.) He was the eldest son of Zipoetes, the previous King. However, he had to kill his younger brother, who had taken over as an independent ruler, as well as all but one of his remaining brothers.
He both enlarged his kingdom, and put it under greater control. His reign was a prosperous and productive one for Bithynia. Later, he founded Nicomedia as his capital, and successfully waged war with Syria. His wife was Ditizele, Queen of Bithynia, and his only known child was Ziaelas, who would succeed him as King of Bithynia.
