Sugar-laden "Energy & Fitness Drink" popular among athletes when it was launched in the early 1960s. As the nation's health awareness gradually increased, people began to realize what was in this stuff and sales tapered off as Nutrament was left behind for more efficacious products.

In 1993 Nutrament’s manufacturer Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. started vigorously marketing the drink to the inner-city market, where its supposed aphrodisiac, medical, and nutritional properties are legendary.

Nutrment is known, along with Yoo-Hoo, as a favorite under-$2 comfort food among crack addicts.
