On Hearing Philip Roth Speak of the Mortality of Friends

It took me minutes to recall his name.

It has been almost forty years, yet I have just now realized
How long I've felt this pain at his gruesome death;
Agonies (and guilt) that have been, at least, greater in duration
Than the time he had to feel the pain of dying.

Immortality should be reserved for the dead.
