One of the stories about the invention of tea involved Bodhidharma, who is also known for inventing Kung-Fu and Ch'an Buddhism.
The story has it that Bodhidharma was trying to stay up all night meditating, but that he kept on falling asleep. Disgusted with himself, he took out a knife and cut off his own eyelids, and threw them on the ground. The eyelids took root, and grew into the tea plant, which later generation of monks would drink to help them meditate.
