I came across this passage in
T.S. Eliot's The Cocktail Party. It reminded me of
Saigyo's
Heian era verse which I have translated as
Why Be Bitter?
What we know of other people
Is only our memory of the moments
During which we knew them...
...We must also remember
That at every meeting we are meeting a stranger.
