Term commonly used in horse racing, but can extend to other events such as jai-alai. Usually refers to a competitor in a race who finished worse than third place. Betting payoffs in such events are normally made to competitors who finish first (win), second (place), or third (show). The other competitors are then said to finish out of the money.
