When tourists think of Philadelphia sandwiches, they think mainly of the cheesesteak, but real Philadelphians know that the best sandwich in Philadelphia is the Philadelphia roast pork sandwich, consisting of boneless pork roasted in its own juices for 24 hours, served on an Italian roll together with sharp provolone cheese and a heaping helping of broccoli rabe.

This sandwich was invented by Italian immigrants living in South Philadelphia in the early 20th century. Some of the more famous places to acquire said sandwich include DiNic's in the Reading Terminal Market, George's Sandwich Shop in the Italian Market, John's Roast Pork (a literal shack by the railroad track on East Snyder Avenue), and Tony and Nick's on East Oregon Avenue.
