138. But then can't the reference (Bedeutung might also be translated as meaning here -TR) of the words that I understand fit the sense of the sentences that I understand? Or the reference of the words fit the reference of another?--Of course, if the reference is the use we make of a word, then talking of it fitting does not have a sense. But we understand only the reference of a word when we hear it or say it aloud; we grasp it in a flash, and what we thus grasp is surely something different from the sense of 'use' that is extended in time.
