British character actor and writer, 1908-1992. Graduate of RADA. Noted stage roles: Henry Higgins in Pygmalion (1937), Sheridan Whiteside in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941). Over 60 screen roles over 5 decades, including The African Queen(1951), Around the World in 80 Days (1956 and the 1989 miniseries), and Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978)
