SAKURA MATSUKI
Sakura Matsuki is a Japanese holiday celebrated when cherry trees bloom. During Sakura Matsuki, people go and view the beautiful cherry blossoms that are blooming. Cherry blossom viewing begins as early as 8 AM. It lasts through the day. The cherry blossom is the Japanese National Flower.
First, single petals bloom. Then, double-petal flowers bloom. The petals are blown off the trees by the wind. Some cherry blossoms are preserved in salt and then used to make “cherry water.” People also attend parties during Sakura Matsuki. The people are usually dressed in kimonos and other traditional clothes. There is festive singing and dancing.
