The salmon/trout family, containing 11 genera and about 66 species of fish, distributed all over the world, in freshwater and saltwater environments.  Some species are variously termed "salmon", "trout", "char", and "cisco", all important food fish.

The two most important defining characteristics of Salmonidae appear to be the small adipose fin just in front of the tail, and a visible lateral line down each side of the fish.

Several extinct genera of Salmonoidei (such as Paleolox) may or may not be placeable within the Salmonidae.

• Stenodus "inconnu"

Subfamily Thymallinae:

• Protothymallus  (Eocene through Miocene, EXTINCT)
• Thymallus "grayling"

  • A. ohridana (Lake Ohrid and others in Albania and Macedonia, VULNERABLE)
• Brachymystax "lenok"
• Eosalmo (Eocene, EXTINCT)
• Hucho "huchen" or "taimen"
• Oncorhyncus "salmon", "trout"

• Salmo "salmon", "trout"
• Salmothymus
  • S. obtusirostris (Adriatic Trout, ENDANGERED)
