SIS'E.RA (arrayed for battle).

  1. Captain of the army of Jabin, a Canaanite king. His army was defeated by the Israelites under Barak. Fleeing from the battle, Sisera sought rest and safety in the tent of Jael, who killed him while he slept (Judges 4:2-22; 5:1ff; 1 Samuel 12:9). To be slain by a woman was a disgraceful death.
  2. One of the Nethinim whose descendants returned to Jerusalem (Ezra 2:53; Nehemiah 7:55).
