Spirit is a low-fare airline that flies 27 McDonnell Douglas MD-80's. It started flying in 1992 with a route network concentrated around the northeastern US, but eventually moved its focus southward to Florida. In 1999, Spirit moved its headquarters from Detroit to South Florida.

Despite the post-9/11 airline bust, Spirit has stayed in the air. On September 11, 2002, they offered all of their seats for free as a "thank you" to their customers.
