Strine is the
antiquated term for
Australian slang and colloquialisms. The term had
currency throughout the 1800s until around 1970, when the globalisation of Australian media brought
the cultural cringe to many Australians.
The word is a contraction of the longer word "Australian" and is most often pronounced "stROYne" rather than "stryne".
