No, not Tonto, the Lone Ranger's sidekick. This is "The Original New Timbral Orchestra", a giant, circa-1970, customized Moog modular synthesizer. Like early computers, some early modular synths could require a room unto themselves - T.O.N.T.O. was one such beast.

It was designed by Malcolm Cecil; Cecil and his partner Robert Margouleff were a recording duo in the early 70s, and were the synth programmers for Stevie Wonder, from Stevie's first period of independence from Motown to Songs in the Key of Life - some video footage from the "Superstition" era (I think) shows T.O.N.T.O. in action during the recording sessions.

It has undergone some changes over the years, but still functions. T.O.N.T.O.'s current owner is Mark Mothersbaugh.
