The Antisuperstitious campaign of 1941 sought to eradicate voodoo. Thousands of Haitian Catholics publicly took an oath which consisted of renouncing voodoo forever as a form of Satanism. Assisted by the army, the priests went on horseback to attack the voodoo temples and set alight huge bonfires of objects sacred to Voodoo.
