The Forward is a historically
Socialist,
secular Jewish newspaper founded on April 22,
1897. Its motto used to be "
Workers of the World, Unite!", though now it is considerably more
bourgeois, catering to older
liberal Jews full of
nostalgia, and carrying Jewish-interest news, politics, and culture.
The Forward was originally published in
Yiddish (as the "Forverts") and at one point reached a daily circulation of 250,000. In 1983, with circulation declining, it became a weekly paper. Now it is published in
English, Yiddish, and
Russian.
