The Hoff Theater officially opened its doors to University of Maryland, College Park students in 1972, during the renovations of the Stamp Student Union. The theater was named after William Hoff in 1975; Hoff had served as manager of the Union. The theater was the on-campus hangout for students interested in seeing first and second run films. In the late nineties, the theater was moved to a temporary location in the Bio-Psych Building while the Student Union once again underwent a major expansion and renovation project. In the fall of 2002, the theater once again opened its doors in the Stamp Student Union. This newly renovated theater featured amenities found in most modern movie theaters.
