Movie directed by
Emir Kusturica, telling the story of young Perhan, a
gypsy boy with
telekinetic powers.
Despite the presence of supernatural events, the story comes through as realistic, and it is easy to feel sympathy for the
characters. The cinematography and
Goran Bregovic's fantastic music sets the mood: an everchanging mix of emotions, never letting grief completely overshadow joy or relief and continually presenting new facets of Perhan's disastrous journey for his loved ones.
Time of the Gypsies is one of
Emir Kusturica's darker films, never slipping into
farce mode the way
Black Cat, White Cat and, to a lesser degree
Underground does.
Nominated for a
Golden Palm Award at the
Cannes Film Festival for and awarded a
Guldbagge in the category 'Best Foreign Film'.
