Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford, in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio. She was the second of four children. She studied humanities at Howard University and Cornell University, followed by an academic career at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale, and since 1989 she has had a chair at Princeton University. She has also worked as an editor for Random House, a critic, and given numerous public lectures, specializing in African-American literature.

Morrison wrote her first book, The Bluest Eye, in 1970 and since then has become very successful and won various prestigious awards including the The Nobel Prize in Literature 1993 and a Pulitzer Prize in 1988. Her book Beloved was made into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has chosen three of her books for her book club.
