A Vala, the greatest among them in strength and deeds of prowess, surnamed Astaldo, the Valiant. He uses no weapon in combat but his bare hands, and can endure longer and run swifter than anything that goes on feet. It seems he doesn't have much of a temper, but laughs ever in battle, even in the face of Melkor he laughed in battles before the Elves came. Always he has been the bane of Morgoth, and has never been defeated by him, save only in the time when Morgoth with Ungoliant destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor, where he was blinded and could not see his foes. His wife is the fleet-footed Nessa, the sister of Oromë.
