University of Michigan, operated by students.
Started in
1952 as a station inside of the
residence halls, and began broadcasting at
10 watts in
1971.
Changed its call letters to WCBN, and its frequency to
88.3 in
1977.

Grew to
100w in
1984.
Today it is primarily for freeform radio shows, or shows that do not have a set playlist or format, though it does have specialty shows (like the "
Sounds of the Subcontinent," which covers
Indian music).
Consider it the
Midwest's
WFMU.
