A former exclave of South Africa in Namibia, was turned over to the latter in 1994. Its population of 25 000 remains very South African.

Originally annexed by the British in 1878, and incorporated into britain's Cape colony (now South Africa) in 1884. South africa received German South West Africa (now Namibia) from the UN as a protectorate in 1922. Walvis Bay was administered as part of this area until Namibia acheived independence in 1990.
