Westinghouse is usually referred to as "Westingmouse" by
General Electric employees as a slightly
derogatory term of endearment.
Westinghouse and
General Electric were big competitors
back in the day. These days, the two companies are much less in direct
competition with each other. Much of the equipment
manufactured by one company was copied by the other in one form or another but the two pieces of equipment are completely incompatable. For example,
GE turbines spin
counterclockwise when viewed from the
steam admission side.
Westinghouse turbines, even though they may be the same size and have the same power generating characteristics as their
GE counterparts spin
clockwise.
Westinghouse equipment is also referred to as "Circle W" equipment due to Westinghouse's logo.
