Xenopus is a genus of frogs native to Africa, and also known collectively as the "African clawed frogs," due to the conspicuous black claws on three of the toes on each foot. The name "xenopus" literally means "strange foot" in Greek.
In total there are 20 species in the Xenopus genus. The most famous is Xenopus laevis which is commonly used in medical studies because its unusually large oocytes make it easy to inject foreign genetic material.
