The traditional Spanish comic operetta (generally in one act) of which thousands have been and are being composed. It has spoken dialogues with songs and choruses. The musical plays of Calderón (1600- 1681) are Zarzuelas. The most famous Zarzuela is J. Valverde's La Gran Via ('The High Road'; Madrid, 1886).
