An alternating knot is one that can
be drawn so that as your finger follows
the knot through crossings it alternate between going over and going under.
Tate conjecture that every alternating
knot was nontrivial, and that you could
pass between any&two alternating diagrams for the same knot via flype moves. These conjectures were proved
true using the Jones polynomial.
