The name given in medieval English monasteries to a small closet or inclosure for study, usually built against a window, but you could apply the name to any cell or recess off the cloister where monks might read. After the 16th century, with the decline in monasteries, the word fell out of general use until libraries adopted the term for private study cubicles.
