For over a hundred years the US
mint and collectors have been at odds. The mint blames every coin shortage (see
The great coin shortage of the '60s) on collectors, while collectors complain about the large number of excessively high priced commemoratives. When large numbers of coins are made and then recalled the mint goes to great lengths to get them all back. And while they might have been purchased legally, the mint considers them stolen property. Usually these coins are seized and destroyed without
due process.
