The SVD (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova) is a gas-operated, semi-automatic
Russian sniper rifle designed by
Yevgeniy Feodorovich Dragunov, who was a colleague of
Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, the designer of the well-known
AK-47 series of rifles. The Dragunov is also quite similiar to the AK-47 in design. It was formally adopted by the
Red Army in 1963, replacing the
SVT-40 as the standard sniper rifle.
