In the human anatomy, flat bones have thin, roughly parallel surfaces of compact bone, protecting a lightweight layer of spongy bone. Flat bones form the roof of the skull, the sternum, the ribs and the scapulae.

The internal and external tables refer to the plates of compact bone on the surface of flat bones, the spongy bone in the center is called the diploe.
