A fictitious entity roughly analogus to
Uncle Sam, in that he is a symbol of sorts representing a country; in this case, the country is
Great Britain. He is usually depicted as a rotund, blond-haired man in a blue suit with a
Union Jack waistcoat and top hat.
His name originates from The History of John Bull, a humorous novel about English politics, written by John Arbuthnot in the early 18th century. Arbuthnot was a physician by trade, and a contemporary of Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope.
