The usual, and patently incorrect, name for the robes
Heian women wore. Literally, it means "
twelve layers," coming from a story in which a
court lady drowned because of her beautiful clothing. However, most Heian court women wore two, three, or even four times this many layers of
uchiki.
Ju-ni hitoe makes recognizing paintings depicting the
Heian era exceptionally easy.
