A horse that runs with a pacing gait, the foreleg and hindleg of each side moving and striking the ground in unison. This swinging gait is unbalanced and unnatural for most breeds of horses. Pacers are bred and trained for harness racing. The most famous harness racing pacer of all time was Dan Patch who set records for harness racing in the first decade of the 20th century.
