Pai Mei is a
legendary character who shows up in several
martial arts films, the most recent of which was
Kill Bill: Volume 2, and was
popularized by films directed by the
Shaw Brothers. Pai Mei usually has a long, white
beard and bushy, white
eyebrows (in fact, Pai Mei translates from
Chinese into
English as "
White Eyebrows"). He usually appears as an extremely powerful and skilled
master who serves to teach young martial artists he deems worthy of his tutelage or a wicked
villain. He also possesses a deadly array of techniques, such as his
Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.
Pai Mei was based off of Pak Mei, a former Shaolin master and member of the Invincible Five. He was said to have turned his back on the Shaolin Order and aided the Qing Dynasty in its fight against Chinese rebels, a category which the Shaolin monks fell under. Pak Mei is also the title given to Pai Mei's fighting style, which is still practiced to this day.
